EPISODE # 55

Bile & Digestion: Ox Bile, TUDCA, Taurine & Phosphatidylcholine Explained

Which bile-support supplement is right

Bile plays an essential role in digestion, but its benefits extend far beyond breaking down fats. Produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, bile also supports the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K, healthy bowel movements, cholesterol clearance, liver detoxification and microbial balance in the gut.

When bile flow is sluggish or insufficient, you may experience bloating after fatty meals, nausea, pale or greasy stools, constipation, diarrhoea or discomfort beneath the right rib cage. Poor bile flow may also contribute to SIBO, increased histamine activity and greater oxalate absorption.

In this episode of The Histamine Well Podcast, Joanne explains how bile supports digestion and compares four commonly recommended supplements: ox bile, TUDCA, taurine and phosphatidylcholine.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • What bile does and why it is essential for fat digestion
  • Common signs of sluggish or inadequate bile flow
  • What happens to digestion after gallbladder removal
  • How poor bile flow may contribute to SIBO and histamine intolerance
  • The connection between poor fat digestion and oxalate absorption
  • How ox bile supports the direct digestion of dietary fats
  • How TUDCA supports liver cells and healthy bile flow
  • Why taurine is needed to produce functional bile salts
  • How phosphatidylcholine supports bile quality and methylation
  • Important safety considerations before using bile supplements

Ox bile, TUDCA, taurine and phosphatidylcholine are not interchangeable. Each supports a different part of the bile pathway, so choosing the right supplement depends on what is affecting your digestion, liver or gallbladder function.

Listen now to better understand the role of bile in gut health—and how targeted bile support may benefit digestion, histamine balance and overall well-being.

Stay well,
